French drains are commonly considered when water moves through saturated soil or repeatedly collects along a narrow low area, slope, or foundation edge.

What a contractor may evaluate
A contractor may compare soil conditions, slope, the source of the water, trench location, outlet options, and whether surface grading or a different drainage method would solve the problem more directly.
French drain versus surface drainage
A French drain is not the default answer for every wet yard. Broad surface runoff or widespread low grading may be better addressed through grading or a broader yard drainage plan.
